The Hershey Corporation is one of the biggest chocolate producers in the world right now, and Hershey, Pennsylvania, is still a well-liked vacation spot. Over his life, he also made several donations to foundations and organizations totaling millions of dollars. Along with his wife, he founded the boarding school Hershey Industrial School, which is today the Milton Hershey School. Hershey was a devoted philanthropist who donated his money to social and educational organizations throughout his lifetime. Hershey was noted for his progressive business methods, such as paying fair salaries and providing employee perks, and he was one of the first entrepreneurs to give free health care to his staff. He also built a model village for his employees, complete with inexpensive housing, schools, and recreational amenities. He established a plant in Derry Church, Pennsylvania, which he eventually called Hershey. Hershey sold his caramel company for $1 million in 1900 and concentrated on chocolate manufacture. He returned to Lancaster and continued experimenting with recipes, eventually developing a method for producing economical and tasty milk chocolate. He became enamored with the concept of manufacturing milk chocolate, which at the time was a rare and expensive indulgence. Hershey's big break came when he viewed a demonstration of chocolate-making technology at the 1893 World's Fair Exhibition in Chicago. He began his career as an apprentice to a candy manufacturer in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and then established his own confectionery company in Philadelphia. Hershey was born in Derry Township, Pennsylvania, and received a limited education as a result of his family's financial difficulties.
